Triumph TR2 Books and Sources

The brochure, workshop manual, magazines, club papers, results tables and archives behind every page of this site, each with its address and how far to trust it.

The oldest sources behind this site are two items in Motor Sport for November 1952: its guide to the London Motor Show, which lists the 20TS prototype on the Triumph stand, and Bill Boddy's report from the show. Every source the site cites is in the list below, from the factory's brochure and manual and the magazines of the 1950s to the clubs' guides, a specialist's change points and the tables of race results, each with its address printed as plain text where it has one.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The word beside a source grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it, and there are four. Primary sources date from the 1950s and come from the factory or from witnesses: the factory's brochure of December 1953 and its workshop manual, Motor Sport's reports and impressions of 1952–55, Motor Trend and Sports Cars Illustrated in America, and the newsletter of the American owners' club, which was the importer's own and is read as such. Reference sources are later work done with care: the TR Register's and TR-Register Deutschland's guides, Revington TR's change points, the Standard Motor Club's history of Walter Belgrove, the magazine retrospectives and the 2019 sale catalogue of PKV 374, which is used for the car's history. Database sources, such as racingsportscars' results, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked covers encyclopaedias, unsigned web pages and a reader's letter of 2010, chiefly Wikipedia and an unsigned profile of Ken Richardson in Moss Motoring. Each is cited beside a stronger source or named where it is used. A good source can still be wrong on one point, and the pages say so where it matters: Motor Sport's retrospective of 2010 has the TR3 arriving in 1956 and the wrong co-driver for Le Mans in 1954, and the factory's own brochure prints the front track in millimetres with two digits transposed.

On the other pages, small numbered marks at the end of a section lead to the list at the foot of that page, numbered by first use there, and a note after a source says where in it to look: a page, a table, a section or a caption.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16

The sources that carry most weight

Some sources, or groups of them, do most of the work on these pages:

SourceWhat it gives
The factory's brochure and workshop manualThe specification as built, the Jabbeke table, and the commission numbers at which parts changed
Motor Sport, 1952–55The 20TS at the show, the first drives and Boddy's "Impressions", and the reports of the races and rallies
Motor Trend, 1954, and Sports Cars Illustrated, 1955The two full road tests that can be read, both of cars sold in America
The American owners' club's newsletter, 1955How the car was sold in America, and what 227 owners thought of it
Revington TR and the Rimmer catalogueThe change points by date, and the commission numbers by year
TR-Register Deutschland and the TR RegisterThe production figures, the buying advice and the engineers' names
racingsportscarsRace results, with each car's crew and placing
Autoretro, Classic Motorsports, Auto Zeitung and the Triumph Club de FranceThe Belgian coupé, from four accounts

Where they disagree, the pages show each reading beside its source. The production total is one case, the brakes of the Le Mans cars in 1955 another.source 3source 4source 17source 18source 19source 20source 8source 21source 11source 22source 7source 5source 6source 23source 24source 25source 26

Manuals, books and road tests

The workshop manual was read, from scans of the factory's sections and Bentley's reprint, The Complete Official Triumph TR2 & TR3.

Of the British weeklies' road tests, The Motor's of April 1954 survives here only in the figures Wikipedia prints, Autosport's of March 1954 only through the quotations in an American dealer's advertisement, and The Autocar's was not found. Brooklands Books has reprinted the TR2's period tests. The road tests quoted here at first hand are Motor Trend's and Sports Cars Illustrated's, with Motor Sport's reports and impressions beside them.source 4source 24source 13source 27
